Walk the talk on bush survival

26/07/2008 4:00:00 AM
RESIDENTS can learn how not to get lost in the bush at Mount Annan Botanic Garden on Sunday.

As the name ``bushwalking basics'' suggests, a special course will teach about bushwalking aspects such as geographical features to note, map reading, navigation and safety.

The course will be run by guides from the Yarrawood Bushwalking Club.

Mount Annan Botanic Garden director Caz McCallum said bushwalking did not have to be scary nor end in a helicopter rescue.

``Mount Annan Botanic Garden offers an excellent, safe first step for those people wanting to learn how to bushwalk, but not sure of how to get started,'' she said.

``We hope that the course will encourage people to get out into our natural environment and appreciate its beauty.

``The garden is a great first step for those not sure about safe bushwalking but eager to try.''

There will be two walks on the day, with intense educational sessions before, during and after both walks due to the feedback from previous attendees who wanted to learn more about bushwalking.

Children must be accompanied by an adult and the minimum age is eight. The course is on from 10am to 3.45pm. Cost: $10.

Details and bookings: 46347935.
