Tuned for AIDS crisis

2/07/2008 4:00:00 AM
THEY are worlds apart but the Camden Uniting Church will raise money for young African AIDS sufferers at a concert on Sunday.

The Amazing Grace Academy of Performing Excellence (AGAPE), a music school which is a ministry of the church, will host the Gift of Music concert.

All proceeds from the show will be shared between the African AIDS Foundation and the Robert Astill Memorial Fund.

The late Mr Astill was a member of the Camden Uniting Church and died about 20 years ago after falling ill during a mission to Africa.

AGAPE director Heather Bieman said the group is keen to raise money.

``The work he [Robert Astill] went to do, we want to keep on contributing to that,'' she said.

``The African AIDS crisis is immense.

``Each one of us can do a little bit of something to help.''

Mrs Bieman said a team of young adults from the church has gone to Uganda for a short-term mission.

``I am proud to be involved in AGAPE and in a church which looks for ways to help those whose lives have been seriously affected by suffering,'' she said.

The event will star concert pianist Marilyn Meier and Lachlan Glen, of Narellan Vale.

Mrs Bieman said she was excited about the concert last year's raised about $1500.

``I'm very excited about starring Lachlan and Marilyn,'' she said.

``I see many similarities between them. Both are extremely gifted.''

The two pianists will perform solo pieces and then perform together in the second half of the show.

``It's just a great afternoon's entertainment,'' she said.

``[We should] thank God for the amazing blessings we have in this country and for the incredible talent we have in the Macarthur area.''

The Gift of Music, Camden Uniting Church, 2pm, Sunday.

Tickets: $20 (adult), $10 (concession) and $50 (families).
