BERYCE Toovey is one of those larger than life characters who loves to make people smile.
She says she would love to see ``the whole world happy'' but for now will settle with making life easier for Camden Hospital's tireless working staff.
Mrs Toovey is a member of the Camden Hospital Auxiliary, a group of equally tirelessly working volunteers who work year round to raise money for the hospital.
Mrs Toovey, a foundation member, says she is a ``jack of all trades, master of none'' when describing the role she plays. In truth, she makes the pickles that are sold at the Auxiliary's stall four days a week and at Narellan Town Centre once a month. She is also a master with a crochet needle and knits everything from beanies to little dolls.
The money raised is used to fulfil the hospital's ``wish list''. In the last five years, the Auxiliary has helped purchase heart monitors, flexible baths, recovery trolleys and a plaster cast cutter.
``It's a shame hospitals have to rely on auxiliaries but we're lucky because some hospitals don't even have an auxiliary,'' said Mrs Toovey, 70. ``Without the generosity of the Australian people there wouldn't be much comfort for other people.
``Our hospital is just wonderful. They make us feel like we're very special people.''
Mrs Toovey said her reward for volunteering came in the friendships she has formed with other members who range in age from 30 to 82.
``They're absolutely wonderful,'' she said.
``We're a crazy mob. You could be feeling as lousy as anything and they charge your batteries.''
Mrs Toovey also knits colourful jumpers for babies in South Africa and matinee jackets for premature babies.
``It makes you feel good if you can make one woman's life a little easier,'' she said.
``It's a joyful feeling.''
