Council seeks talent

23/07/2008 12:43:00 PM
IF you have an open mind, good interpersonal skills and understand the democratic process, your community needs you.

``Come with as broad a perspective as you possibly can,'' Camden Council general manager Greg Wright said.

He was speaking at a seminar on Monday night for people interested in becoming a councillor at September's council elections.

At the seminar, two new independent candidates Therese Fedeli and Greg Warren confirmed their intention to run in the Central Ward election.

There were also two undecided residents there and the declared candidate Mike Cottrell from North Ward.

Mr Wright said the community wanted their councillors to be accessible and the job required a time commitment to read business papers, attend meetings and council functions and represent the council on different committees and organisations.

``Good interpersonal skills are really important for councillors as they have to be able to get on with people and listen,'' he said. ``They have to have the ability to judge and make balanced decisions.

``In my experience, people who come into the process with very fixed views and are unable to modify those views are not usually successful councillors.''

It appears all nine current councillors intend to stand again for re-election.

Mr Wright said a retiring councillor normally addressed the seminar but ``nobody put up their hand saying they're definitely not coming back''.

Mr Wright said it was important to have a variety of people from different backgrounds on a council

people of all ages, genders, cultures, professions and levels of education.

Candidates have until noon on Wednesday, August 13, to nominate.

The election is on Saturday, September 13.
