$14m gives spark to parks

23/07/2008 8:13:00 PM
CAMDEN Council will inject more than $14 million into new children's playgrounds, sporting fields and parks over the next five years.

About $600,000 will be spent this financial year on replacing playground equipment and on establishing new playgrounds in Narellan and Elderslie.

But most of the council's recreation facilities budget for 2011/12 will be spent on new playgrounds, ovals and pitches and children's play spaces in new estates at Spring Farm, Oran Park and Turner Road (Gregory Hills).

The council's manager of community and recreation services, Linda Campbell, said the council was keen to ensure ``as our community grows that we have the facilities that mean our residents can enjoy the best quality of life possible.

``When we plan new communities, we plan for roads and drainage, but we also look at what facilities people need to give them a good standard of life,'' she said. The council will spend $302,000 this financial year on three new playgrounds in Narellan. They will be at Narellan Library, Jack Nash Reserve and Liquidambar Reserve.

The council will also spend $283,000 on children's playgrounds in Elderslie.

In 2009/10, two new playground sites will be established at Spring Farm and a third in 2010/11.

But the following year will see $13,082,881 spent on two more playgrounds, recreation ovals and pitches and a multipurpose court in Spring Farm.

Also in 2011/12, new children's playgrounds will be built in Elderslie.

There will also be a community park and children's playgrounds in Turner Road and playing fields and children's play spaces in Oran Park.

WHERE THE MONEY WILL BE SPENT:

Narellan: $302,000 on playgrounds in 2008/09.

Spring Farm: $266,000 on playgrounds in 2009/10; $133,000 on a playground in 2010/11; $4,276,000 on playgrounds, ovals and pitches, children's playground and a multipurpose court in 2011/12.

Elderslie: $266,000 on children's playgrounds in 2011/12.

Oran Park: $5,731,000 on playing fields, children's playgrounds and community parks in 2011/12.

Turner Road: $2,794,000 on children's playgrounds and community parks in 2011/12.

12:50 PM AEST | When I heard that some obscure woman from Alaska had been selected as the Republican Party's vice-presidential nominee, my first reaction was not to check the cable news channels, or even the internet news sites. No, my first reaction was to go to YouTube.
