 Council is not footy

Council is not footy

IT'S funny that we have to be reminded to be on our best behaviour at council meetings.

I find it funny not because anyone who attends these meetings by definition should not be wildly raucous and rude. But the fact that a decision about a school could cause fears about security and behaviour is truly beyond my comprehension.

It's a school, not a worshipping ground for the satanic society or something that may (arguably) warrant public outcries of disgust.

But I will not jump to conclusions. I have absolute faith that those attending the meeting would act with ``appropriate decorum'' I mean they won't be allowed any placards or signs,

which must mean that things will be fine!

Is it bad that I was expecting people to show up with their faces painted in team colours? I would totally paint my face in my team colours (what are the team colours again?) and carry massive signs spelling obscenities about that hated enemy (who is the enemy? I keep forgetting silly me!)

Apparently there must be formal behaviour. We must let councillors speak and not yell from the floor. Bummer. I mean who goes to council meetings and doesn't yell at the councillors

and shout team cries and call for the video ref?

There is definitely an enemy, right? We know who they are, what they look like and how bad it will be if they ``win''? That's why we are chanting our war cry, preparing for a battle that must be won at any cost including our dignity, humanity and common sense.

Oh wait there is no us and them, is there?

No enemy, no hostile takeover, and no reason for shouting and writing obscenities.

We don't need to paint our faces because there are no team colours.

We are all human beings and deserve the rights this great nation allows us.

For all those who expected an origin-esque fight tonight when the council was to announce its decision on the Islamic school, I hope you were disappointed. There is no us and them.

I hope everyone remembered that and didn't mistake a council meeting for a football game.

Perhaps one of the reasons that the standards were reminded to everyone, is because this school is an issue that clearly affects our town. Yet again your biased reporting attempts to paint residents as rednecks and yobbos. This DA has many resident passionate, and many who wouldn't normally attend the Council meetings attended, and would not have known about the correct way the meetings are conducted. Not everyone has had the benefit of study and experience first hand to teach them how to act in a situation like this. As for the us and them, it certainly exists. One party are those for the DA and the other are those against the development. Who is us and who is them depends who you speak with. Then again, those who proposed the DA in question didn't even attend tonight, it shows the passion they have for their dream. But then again, perhaps it was too far, or the traffic was a bit too heavy... Those who really cared and were able to, did attend.

Hi Bec, Thank you for your comment, your honesty and your passion. I don’t agree that education has anything to do with ones behavior. Most of the people whom in interact with no longer partake in study and have perfect manners and would know how to behave at a council meeting. I really believe that one knows, or should know how to act at an official meeting. For me it seems that manners have failed us during this whole issue. However I do acknowledge your point regarding the planning issues which have clouded the school. I don’t buy this reason as being the single reason behind the upset, however it is a massive factor because let’s face it Camden is a crowded place and Argyle Street can be a nightmare. It’s great to see passion in the community and to see people going to council meetings I just wish it was for issues like improving infustructure, battling interest rates and helping struggling families rather than fighting a war with "them". Maybe my reporting is bias, but I write opinion pieces based on my own feelings and opinions regarding our community, thank you for sharing your opinions with me even if they contrast my own. Jaz

And all the people there had no hidden agendas? Pfttt. Get real Bec, it was full of rednecks and racists. I knew a girl who doesn't live in the area any more who went to the meeting, and she has long be known to be anti-muslim, lets face it, Camden is a very right wing area, and is proven time and time again

Q: Did Camden Council make the right decision to reject the proposed Islamic school?
